Pozornica prije pozornice. The stage before the stage.

Before debating chambers and courtrooms, there was the concert hall. In Zagreb, at the piano, she learned what no book can teach: how to breathe in front of an audience.

The Vatroslav Lisinski Music School is one of those Zagreb institutions through which generations of Croatian musicians have passed. Gabrijela passed through it early — and quickly. At just eight years old she appeared with the school orchestra as a soloist, performing the first movement of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 12 in A major, K. 414. A concerto with orchestra at that age is not a recital: it is a responsibility towards thirty other musicians, a conductor and an audience, in real time, with no second takes.

A year later, aged nine, the programme was Bach — the Toccata in G major, BWV 916, Presto movement. Anyone who knows the piece knows: this is not forgiving music. It demands precision, independence of the hands and a cool head at high speed.

Državno zlato u duuNational gold in duo

Godine 2017. s kolegicom Kristinom Vartušek, pod mentorstvom prof. In 2017, together with her colleague Kristina Vartušek and under the mentorship of Prof. Gordana Cepika, she won first place at the national competition of the Croatian Association of Music and Dance Pedagogues (HDGPP) in the piano duo category. The duo is a discipline of its own: two pianists must think as one, sharing tempo, breath and phrase. In that category you win not by virtuosity but by listening.

Listening before speaking — a habit from the duo that would later prove decisive in debate, where the winner is the one who hears the opponent best.

An hour of practice a day, for years. Stage fright transformed into concentration. The silence of the hall before the first bar. Everything orators learn only at university, she brought with her from music school — together with a feel for tempo, pause and dynamics that translates perfectly to public speaking.
